‘Hackathon [YAN] Childhood 2015’ Contest Will Bring Together Creative Young People across Armenia

Microsoft Innovation Center, in cooperation with Microsoft Armenia, Public Journalism Club, Vanadzor Technology Center, announces the ‘Hackathon [YAN] Childhood 2015’ contest for innovative ideas and solutions. Teams, consisting of programmers and non-programmers, will develop the prototypes/demo versions of their web and mobile applications that will be assessed by the panel of experts and mentors.

Hackathon [YAN] 2015 is not theme-oriented and is open to any innovative solutions to local and international issues.

Hackathon [YAN] Childhood 2015 will take place in Vanadzor city on December 12-13, 2015. Currently, the Armenian Government, World Bank and Enterprise Incubator Foundation have teamed up to develop Vanadzor into a technological center.

“Since 2011 Microsoft Innovation Center, together with the Public Journalism Club, has annually held this contest to develop creative thinking and entrepreneurship skills among the young. As new technological initiatives are now unfolding in Vanadzor, we have opted for this city and enrolled teams from Vanadzor, Gyumri, Yerevan and other towns,” said Artashes Vardanyan, Head of Microsoft Innovation Center Armenia. The organizers will cover the transportation for teams from Yerevan and Gyumri to Vanadzor and back.

Hackathon [YAN]s are usually held in unique and interesting places, and this year Stepan Zoryan N 22Primary School in Vanadzor is chosen as a venue. Seminars on various technologies will be delivered within the framework of the contest. Founders of various successful Armenian startups will share their experience with the newcomers.

Best teams will be awarded with various prizes. Two teams, selected by Microsoft Innovation Center Armenia, will be involved in the Startup Acceleration Program. The event is specially supported by the Knight-Mozilla OpenNews Foundation.

“On behalf of the foundation the Public Journalism Club will give a gratuity for the most interesting idea and demo version of a tool for investigative journalists. The foundation has continually supported Hackathonyans and promoted the event across the world,” said Seda Muradyan, President of the Public Journalism Club.

Hackathon [YAN] Childhood 2015 is organized with the assistance of World Bank, Enterprise Incubator Foundation, RA Ministry of Economy, Lori Regional Council, ArmenTel (Beeline Armenia) and Knight-Mozilla OpenNews.

What is Hackathon?

Hackathon is a Silicon Valley-generated extensive contest aimed at solving existing problems through collaborative computer programming and new technologies. The first Hackathon [YAN] was organized in 2011 with 32 teams and more than 150 participants. The interest in the contest increases year by year. 35 teams participated in Innovation Hackathon [YAN] 2012Hackathon[YAN] Flight 2013 took place at Zvartnots International Airport. 58 teams from Yerevan, Gyumri, Vanadzor and Ijevan took part in the Hackathon [YAN] 2014 organized within the framework of Innoweekend in Gyumri.

All winners of Hackathon [YAN] have received valuable prizes and have had cooperation and funding opportunities. Some of winning teams work successfully till today.

What do we expect?

The result of this Hackathon [YAN] is most likely to be the creation of a number of prototypes for ready-made projects, mobile applications that can be implemented not only in Armenia but also in international market.
