Statement of Journalist Organizations on the Threat to “Medialab.am”

On January 30, Radio Liberty and several other media outlets reported that the editorial office of Medialab.am had received a serious threat from a Facebook social network user. The reason for this is the caricature, published recently by the media, about buying flowers comprising 7 million drams in December 2017 by the Ministry of Defense and the corruption risks in the army. Meanwhile, the user hinted that Medialab.am could face the fate of the French "Charlie Hebdo" magazine that was attacked in January 2015.

According to Marianna Grigoryan, chief editor of the website, their organization receives threats from time to time but this is one of the most extraordinary. It is worth to mention that in August 2016, unknown people broke the glass of the car of the Medialab.am editor and stole 107 caricatures depicting the country's leaders and other high-ranking officials. However, the criminal case against this incident was suspended due to the fact that the accused was not known.

In this case, the name of the Facebook user is known and even if it is fraudulent, the law enforcement agencies have all the capabilities to identify the person's identity and to detect it.

            Taking into consideration that:

  • The threatening user brought an example of the tragedy of "Charlie Hebdo" magazine which was attacked by 10 radical Islamic extremists,
  • Considering the danger realistic, Marianna Grigoryan applied to the law enforcement agencies,

We, the undersigned, demand:

• To initiate a criminal case and take necessary measures to fully investigate the incident, detect and subject to criminal liability the user who threatened the editorial office,

• Ensure proper supervision by the RA Police and ensure the editorial security before the completion of the above process.
